Scripture to Read: John 4:1–6
Jesus’ ministry, while here on earth, reached into the lives of those who were spiritually hungry and often in desperate need. But those who are satisfied with their lives and who see no spiritual need within them are the ones who are usually the hardest to reach with the gospel of Christ. They have allowed the trappings of this world to capture their hearts. Therefore, they are blinded to the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ (2 Corinthians 4:3–4). Jesus came to do the Father’s will (John 4:34, John 5:30), so as we read John 4:1–6 today, we see in John 4:4, “And He had to pass through Samaria.” Jesus had to go through Samaria because God the Father had a divine appointment for Him there. As we walk with our Lord each day, we can trust that God will lead us to where He desires to use us. We must live our lives each day not asking God to bless our plans (James 4:13–15) but to seek Him passionately so we know what His plans are for us. We know He’s prepared works for us to accomplish (Ephesians 2:10); therefore, let’s ask Him daily what He has in store so we fulfill all He has for us to do (Philippians 2:13), knowing He’s using us for His glory. That is why we must also pray Colossians 4:3–4, asking God for the opportunities He has for us and living expectantly, looking for those opportunities, knowing our Lord wants to use us.
Challenge & Application
• Why are people who have very little needs usually the hardest to reach with the gospel of Christ?
• How did Jesus know He had to go to Samaria, and how do we know what God has for us to do each day?
Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!
