Day 2

Scripture to Read: John 13:34–35

Jesus reminds His disciples what is of first importance, as He says in John 13:34–35, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” Jesus tells the eleven that this is a new commandment, but we know that Jesus had already said in Matthew 22:37–40 that the greatest commandment was to love “God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind” and that the second greatest commandment was, “‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” But now, the disciples had a living example of what genuine love looked like in action. They had experienced Jesus’ love for them firsthand and watched how Jesus loved others. So, when Jesus told them to love each other as He had loved them they knew exactly what they must do. Jesus’ command is for us as well. Though Jesus does not live here in the flesh, we have His Word, and we know how Jesus loved. We must love each other in the same way, and here is why: Jesus made it clear that as we love each other in the way He loves us, everyone will know that we belong to Him. People need to know Jesus as their Lord and loving others as He loves us shows others how much Jesus loves them. We must love everyone well so that all have the opportunity to know our King.

Day 1

Jesus and the eleven disciples are still in the upper room. Judas had left to fulfill his betrayal of Jesus, but Jesus took the time to deeply invest in the eleven who remained with Him. Jesus said in John 13:31–33, "Therefore when he had gone out, Jesus *said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in Him; 32 if God is glorif...

Day 3

We know Jesus had told the disciples they could not go where He was going, but He then followed that statement with how they were to love each other. However, Peter passed right over how they were to love and instead circled back to what Jesus said before that. We read in John 13:36–38, "Simon Peter *said to Him, “Lord, where are You going?” ...

Day 4

Jesus had just told Peter he would deny Jesus three times before the rooster crowed. God does not have the Apostle John record Peter’s response, but we know from Matthew 26:35 and Mark 14:31 that Peter insisted, “Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!” And they all were saying the same thing also. So, even the other ten disciple...

Day 5

Jesus continued sharing and said (in John 14:2–4), “In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. 3 If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also. 4 And you know the way where I am going.” ...

Day 6

In John 14:7, Jesus reminds the disciples that by knowing Him they know God the Father too. But Philip immediately reveals that this makes no sense to him at all. So he asks Jesus in John 14:8, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” Jesus does not want there to be any confusion about what He had just said, so He gives Philip and...

Day 7

We finish up this week with Jesus saying in John 14:12–14, “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father. 13 Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask Me anything in M...
