Day 6

Scripture to Read: Hebrews 5:11-12

God, through the writer of Hebrews, lovingly rebukes the Jewish Christians to whom this letter was first written. But, for any one believer today who is not understanding the fullness of who Christ is and all He has done for them, then this is a loving rebuke for them as well. What has happened and why is this loving rebuke being given? The Jewish Christians had become spiritually “dull and sluggish” in hearing God and His Word. They had chosen to become unenthusiastic about their relationship with God and His Word. God even says to them, through the writer of Hebrews, that these Jewish Christians had been believers long enough that they actually ought to be teaching others His Truth. We need to examine our own lives and ask ourselves, “Have I become bored and uninterested in God and His Word? Have I settled for mediocrity instead of passionately pursuing God and His Word?” We need to consider that the original 11 disciples (Judas hung himself, so there were just 11 when Jesus was resurrected) became incredible preachers and teachers after spending three years with Jesus. Now, should we not be doing the same if we’ve been a believer for more than three years? We have the same Holy Spirit living in us that the original disciples received, so we ought to be beyond being a spiritual infant, and we should be feasting on the meat of God’s Word. The choice is ours, whether we remain “dull and sluggish” or passionately pursue God and His Word every day.

Challenge & Application

What did God teach you today about yourself? Are you passionately, excitedly pursuing God and His Word, and if not, why not? Who do you know that needs to hear this truth? When will you share this with them this week?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

As we ended Hebrews 4, God led the writer to share with us that our Lord Jesus Christ is our Great High Priest. As our High Priest, He did not just perform sacrifices on our behalf, but Christ became our sacrifice to pay the full price for all sin, for all time, for everyone who would surrender to Him as Lord. Today we begin Hebrews 5:1-4 wit...

Day 2

As we begin today, of course we are feeding off of what God taught us yesterday about Christ being our Great High Priest. God lets us know that Christ did not exalt/glorify Himself either to become our Great High Priest. God says it beautifully in Philippians 2:6-11 “who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with Go...

Day 3

There is no doubt that our Lord Jesus Christ is God. Anyone to question that fact does not understand God and His Word. God lovingly manifested Himself in the Person of Jesus Christ so that we could know God intimately. Trying to explain how God is One, but that He’s also Three unique Persons is difficult indeed. There is not a perfect illust...

Day 4

When we think about suffering, it usually sends chills down our spine. No one looks forward to suffering, and most of us ask the Lord to deliver us and to protect us from suffering. But, suffering is a part of life for everyone. Suffering comes in two different ways. One form of suffering is from the sin that we commit. When sin entered man i...

Day 5

The fact that Christ had to suffer on our behalf to pay the penalty for our sin is humbling. As we read in yesterday’s devotion, Christ learned obedience through His suffering, not that He was not already perfect and obedient. Still, Christ showed us how to live in obedience to the Father through suffering. Christ, through His suffering, was ...

Day 7

We come to a close on Hebrews 5 today, but we continue to examine where we are spiritually with our Lord. God clarifies what it means to be a spiritual infant. God tells us that everyone who only feeds on the milk of God’s Word, the basic principles of God’s Word, is inexperienced in the deeper truth of God’s Word. God also says that spiritua...
