Scripture to Read: Hebrews 5:1-4
As we ended Hebrews 4, God led the writer to share with us that our Lord Jesus Christ is our Great High Priest. As our High Priest, He did not just perform sacrifices on our behalf, but Christ became our sacrifice to pay the full price for all sin, for all time, for everyone who would surrender to Him as Lord. Today we begin Hebrews 5:1-4 with an explanation of what every earthly high priest did for the Nation of Israel. First, the high priest was chosen from the family line of Aaron, Moses’s brother, and was appointed to act on behalf of all the people in things relating to God. The high priest would offer sacrifices for sins, not just for the people of Israel but also for himself because he also was a sinful man. The high priest was to be kind and patient with people who were “ignorant and misguided” to the truths of God’s Word, because the high priest, as a man, also had his weaknesses. We also see that no one appointed themselves as a high priest, but the high priest was called by God, just as Aaron, the first high priest, was called. God set everything in order so that the Nation of Israel could stay in right fellowship with God. Because our Lord Jesus Christ is our Great High Priest, it is through Him that we remain in right fellowship with our Heavenly Father. Christ’s sacrifice cleansed us completely so we can walk in right fellowship with our Creator, God.
