Day 3

Scripture to Read: Genesis 24:10-14

In today's devotion, Abraham's servant sets out to find a wife for Abraham's son Isaac. As the servant swore by the Lord to carry this out, he is also aware he needs the Lord's guidance in this journey. The servant prays to the Lord in Genesis 24:12, "O Lord, God of my master Abraham, please grant me success today and show steadfast love to my master Abraham." The servant knows that if he is to be successful in finding Isaac's wife, it will only happen by the Lord's provision in bringing her to him. The Lord granting success in this journey would be a marker of His faithfulness. As God provides Isaac a wife, He continues to keep the covenant He made with Abraham and his descendants. We will see in tomorrow's devotion how the Lord answers the specific prayer of this servant. Before we see the Lord's answer, though, consider what we can learn from the prayer of Abraham's servant. In needing guidance, this servant depended upon the Lord. He did not seek to find a wife for Isaac in his wisdom, but he looked to the Lord to provide the woman He would have for Isaac. With God's covenant with Abraham, the servant's prayer was not some prayer that had no basis for an answer. Instead, because of God's covenant with Abraham, the Lord would be sure to hear the prayer of Abraham's servant and answer it because of His faithfulness to His promise. The servant's prayer revealed dependence upon and trust in the Lord. May our prayers show the same.

Day 1

In today's devotion, we read the record of Sarah's death. In dealing with this loss, Abraham grieves his wife's death but also trusts and hopes in the promise of God. We see this because God's Word plainly says in Genesis 23:2, "and Abraham went in to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her." The reality of living in a fallen world brought grief ...

After Sarah's death, the focus shifts to Isaac. God made His covenant with Abraham, and Isaac was the son God had promised. For God to remain faithful to His covenant with Abraham and his descendants, his son Isaac must continue with offspring. In Genesis 24, Abraham sends his servant to find a wife for Isaac. God shows us how serious the dec...

In Genesis 24:17-18, we find the answer to that prayer, "Then the servan...
