Day 4

Scripture to Read: Colossians 2:11

We are all born with a sin-filled, carnal, fleshly nature called “the old man” in Romans 6. God wants us to understand what happened to the “old man” when we surrendered our lives to Christ as our Lord and Savior. We read in Colossians 2:11, “and in Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ.” Circumcision is the cutting away of flesh that is not needed. When we surrendered to Christ as Lord, God the Father cut away our “old man” so that we could be given a brand-new life through Christ through His Holy Spirit who came to live in us. The removal of “the flesh,” the “old man,” means that something was removed for good. God had Paul write it this way in Romans 6:6–7, “knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; 7 for he who has died is freed from sin.” Notice that our “old self” was killed so that our “body of sin” (this is the fleshly shell we each currently live in) might be rendered completely powerless. God shares with us the change that took place when we surrendered to Christ. He wants us to pursue Him and His Word so that we walk in our new life and not give in to the way we were without Him. We’ve been set free, and He wants us walking in that freedom.

Challenge & Application

What happened to our “old man” when we surrendered to Christ, and why is this so important to understand? What does it look like to pursue Christ and His Word each day?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

Every Christian has been given so much through our Lord Jesus Christ. God gave Paul the opportunity to unpack some of the incredible gifts we have through Christ and what we must do because of what Christ has done for us. We read in Colossians 2:6–7, “Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, 7 having been firmly r...

Day 2

Because we are Christians, we must daily walk with a guarded heart and mind. Our enemy, the devil and all of the spiritual forces of wickedness (Ephesians 6:12), would love to see us stumble and fall in our walk with our Lord (1 Peter 5:8). God therefore had Paul write this in Colossians 2:8, “See to it that no one takes you captive through p...

Day 3

God reminds us throughout His Word that Jesus is God in the flesh and that through Christ we have all we need to live this life for Him and His glory. God had Paul write in Colossians 2:9–10, “For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form, 10 and in Him you have been made complete, and He is the head over all rule and authority.”...

Day 5

When Christ became our Lord and Savior, we were given a brand-new life through Him. We were changed by Christ, so we are to live this life according to the change Christ has made in us. Since our “old man” (our “old self”) was crucified, it was also buried, just as Christ’s body was buried for three days after His crucifixion. God had Paul wr...

Day 6

One of the most precious gifts we receive when we surrender to Christ as our Lord and Savior is the complete forgiveness of all of our sins. Most Christians never grasp this truth and therefore live in the guilt and shame of their past. But God had Paul write this in Colossians 2:13–14, “When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncir...

Day 7

God the Father worked miraculously on our behalf through our Lord Jesus Christ so that we could be in a right relationship with Him. We know God the Father has forgiven us of all our sins because Christ’s shed blood paid the full price for our sins. But we also learn more of what God the Father did for us through Christ as we read Colossians ...
