Day 4

Scripture to Read: 2 Timothy 2:5-7

In 2 Timothy 2:5-7, God continues to use Paul to give Timothy (and us) illustrations of what it looks like to walk with Him each day as a follower of our Lord Jesus Christ. Yesterday, God used the soldier as an excellent illustration of what it looks like to walk with Christ. Knowing we face spiritual battles each day means we must be prepared just like a soldier is for warfare. Today, God uses the athlete and the farmer to illustrate what it looks like to walk with Him. An athlete works out daily, eats right, practices their sport, and studies the rules of their sport to prepare for competition. Any athlete who comes into a competition unprepared will end up being defeated. God knows we must spiritually work out every day by praying and being in constant fellowship with Him. We must also read, study, and memorize His Word to be adequately nourished. We must feed our minds and hearts His Word so we are in excellent condition for the competition of this life. We compete each day to overcome what the spiritual forces of darkness use to seek to defeat us. We compete according to God’s Truth and we cling to Him and His Word to walk away victorious. God uses the farmer to illustrate that just as a farmer receives the fruit of his labor, we too see God’s fruit (Galatians 5:22-23) produced in us as we walk in obedience to Him. These are the things we must stay focused on, knowing the Lord is the One who gives us His understanding.

Challenge & Application

1. What did God teach you today about being prepared like an athlete and reaping fruit like a farmer? 2. How are you preparing for the spiritual competition each day and what fruit do you see produced through your walk with Christ?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

As we ended 1 Timothy 1, remember that everyone from the region of Asia had deserted Paul and only Onesiphorus was there to help encourage Paul. God continues to lead Paul, as Paul writes to Timothy (and us) in 2 Timothy 2. There is no doubt that God is warning Timothy (and us) that, as Christians, we will have people turn their backs on us. ...

Day 2

God has called each of us to listen and learn from each other as followers of Christ. We read today in 2 Timothy 2:2, through Paul, how God is telling Timothy (and us) that everything we have learned from God’s Word from godly followers of Christ, we must also teach to others. God has given us His Word to feed us each day, to apply His Truth ...

Day 3

Through Paul, God encourages Timothy (and us) to walk through the difficulties of this life which we have been called to endure. We are to face the challenges “as a good soldier” of our Lord Jesus Christ. A soldier trains for battle, for the soldier recognizes that facing battles is what they have enlisted to do. As Christians, we surrendered...

Day 5

Through Paul today, in 2 Timothy 2:8, God reminds Timothy and us to “Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, descendant of David, according to my gospel.” Remembering that Christ is risen from the dead gives us hope. As a matter of fact, through Paul, God makes the point of the resurrection crystal clear in 1 Corinthians 15:13-17 “…if the...

Day 6

Today, we read 2 Timothy 2:9-10 and we are reminded that Paul was in prison for preaching the gospel. In 2 Timothy 1:16, we were first made aware of Paul’s imprisonment when God had Paul share how Onesiphorus was not ashamed of Paul’s chains. In 2 Timothy 2:9, God has Paul clarify that he was in chains because Paul was being persecuted for pr...

Day 7

As we close out this week in 2 Timothy 2:11-13, through Paul, God proclaims an incredibly trustworthy statement. First, God reminds Timothy (and us) that if we have truly died with Christ, then we will also live with Him. We find this same Truth in Romans 6:8 and again in 1 Thessalonians 5:10. God never wants us to doubt that if we have surre...
