Day 3

Scripture to Read: 2 Timothy 2:3-4

Through Paul, God encourages Timothy (and us) to walk through the difficulties of this life which we have been called to endure. We are to face the challenges “as a good soldier” of our Lord Jesus Christ. A soldier trains for battle, for the soldier recognizes that facing battles is what they have enlisted to do. As Christians, we surrendered to Christ, also realizing that we were signing up for spiritual warfare. Jesus tells us that we must be willing to die to ourselves if we are going to follow Him. Jesus makes this clear in Luke 9:23-24 “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me. 24 For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake, he is the one who will save it.” As a soldier of our Lord Jesus Christ, Jesus also makes this truth clear, about dying to ourselves, in Matthew 10:38 and Luke 14:27. We also read in 2 Timothy 2:4 that a soldier stays focused on their call and does not get caught up in the junk of this world so that they please the one who enlisted them. We must guard our hearts against getting sidetracked with the things of this world that rob us of our time. We must be ready for battle by putting on God’s armor (Ephesians 6:10-18), recognizing that every part of God’s armor is Him and His Word. We will unpack more in tomorrow’s devotion.

Challenge & Application

1. What did God teach you today about being a good soldier for Him and His Kingdom? 2. How are you preparing for the battlefield each day as you walk with our Lord Jesus Christ?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

As we ended 1 Timothy 1, remember that everyone from the region of Asia had deserted Paul and only Onesiphorus was there to help encourage Paul. God continues to lead Paul, as Paul writes to Timothy (and us) in 2 Timothy 2. There is no doubt that God is warning Timothy (and us) that, as Christians, we will have people turn their backs on us. ...

Day 2

God has called each of us to listen and learn from each other as followers of Christ. We read today in 2 Timothy 2:2, through Paul, how God is telling Timothy (and us) that everything we have learned from God’s Word from godly followers of Christ, we must also teach to others. God has given us His Word to feed us each day, to apply His Truth ...

Day 4

In 2 Timothy 2:5-7, God continues to use Paul to give Timothy (and us) illustrations of what it looks like to walk with Him each day as a follower of our Lord Jesus Christ. Yesterday, God used the soldier as an excellent illustration of what it looks like to walk with Christ. Knowing we face spiritual battles each day means we must be prepare...

Day 5

Through Paul today, in 2 Timothy 2:8, God reminds Timothy and us to “Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, descendant of David, according to my gospel.” Remembering that Christ is risen from the dead gives us hope. As a matter of fact, through Paul, God makes the point of the resurrection crystal clear in 1 Corinthians 15:13-17 “…if the...

Day 6

Today, we read 2 Timothy 2:9-10 and we are reminded that Paul was in prison for preaching the gospel. In 2 Timothy 1:16, we were first made aware of Paul’s imprisonment when God had Paul share how Onesiphorus was not ashamed of Paul’s chains. In 2 Timothy 2:9, God has Paul clarify that he was in chains because Paul was being persecuted for pr...

Day 7

As we close out this week in 2 Timothy 2:11-13, through Paul, God proclaims an incredibly trustworthy statement. First, God reminds Timothy (and us) that if we have truly died with Christ, then we will also live with Him. We find this same Truth in Romans 6:8 and again in 1 Thessalonians 5:10. God never wants us to doubt that if we have surre...
