Day 5

Scripture to Read: 1 Peter 3:9

The attitude God lays out for us today in 1 Peter 3:9 is for us to make sure we’re not returning evil for evil or insult for insult, but giving a blessing instead. God never wants us repaying evil for evil. God also doesn’t want us retaliating with insults when people insult us. Instead, God says to pay people back with a blessing. In our flesh (the shell we live in and which is bent toward every kind of evil, as seen in Galatians 5:19–21), we will always want to retaliate, get revenge, pay back evil for evil, and so on. But God wants our lives to look different since we’ve been redeemed from the power and penalty of sin by the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. God makes this point clear again in Romans 12:17–19, Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right in the sight of all men. 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men. 19 Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. Imagine if every believer walked according to this one Truth from God. Our world would look much different than it does right now. If believers never returned evil for evil, families would be healed, broken relationships would be restored, and we’d see God’s transforming work. It’s not that God is not working; it’s that His children are unwilling to obey Him.

Challenge & Application

· What difference would you see in people around you if they lived according to 1 Peter 3:9? · How are you willingly paying back people with a blessing who have done evil to you?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

We continue our journey through 1 Peter 3. As we saw last week, God gave us the beautiful picture of how a husband and wife are to live out their marriage relationship in a manner that honors Him. God wants us to understand that what He laid out for the husband-and-wife relationship is not just for the married couple. God also led Peter to wr...

Day 2

Today we focus on the second characteristic God commands us to have as Christians. God tells us in 1 Peter 3:8 that we are also to be sympathetic, so we are to sympathize with each other. To be sympathetic means we must have a heart of compassion and kindness toward each other. As we show God’s compassion and kindness, we also have to guard a...

Day 3

God wants our lives to look starkly different than the world in which we live. If we look like the world, we’re either still lost in our sin or remaining incredibly immature in our walk with Christ (1 Corinthians 2:14 & 1 Corinthians 3:1–3). So, the third characteristic God lays out for us is to be brotherly. God commanded us to love each oth...

Day 4

Today we examine the fifth characteristic God has given us in 1 Peter 3:8. God tells us to be humble in spirit. We must never forget that humility is a choice and not something we ask God to give us. As we humble ourselves, we willingly serve our Lord by serving others. God has called us to be servants and to lay down our lives for Him throug...

Day 6

The six characteristics God has called all of us to walk in when we’re willing to obey them, God promises His blessing. God’s Word says in 1 Peter 3:9, …for you were called for the very purpose that you might inherit a blessing. Too often, we ask for God’s blessing instead of paying attention to His Word, where He clearly reveals how to recei...

Day 7

In 1 Peter 3:10–12, God has Peter quote Psalm 34:12–16. In Psalms 34:12, a question is asked: “Does anyone want to live a life that is long and prosperous?” Of course, the obvious answer is “yes.” So, God, through the psalmist and then through Peter, continues to tell us how to live a life that He blesses. First, God commands that we guard ou...
