Day 4

Scripture to Read: 1 Peter 3:8

Today we examine the fifth characteristic God has given us in 1 Peter 3:8. God tells us to be humble in spirit. We must never forget that humility is a choice and not something we ask God to give us. As we humble ourselves, we willingly serve our Lord by serving others. God has called us to be servants and to lay down our lives for Him through serving others. God knows we struggle with humility because He tells us in Philippians 2:3–5, Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; 4 do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. 5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus. God would not have to tell us NOT to be selfish and conceited unless we struggled with being selfish and conceited. God even tells us to have the same attitude as Christ Jesus our Lord. As we know from Philippians 2:8, …He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Notice God’s Word says Christ humbled Himself, which is what God expects from us each day. If God has to humble us because we’re unwilling to humble ourselves, then God will do the humbling (Hebrews 12:5–11). But God wants us to follow the example of Christ and humble ourselves so that we serve Him well by serving those here on earth.

Challenge & Application

· Knowing humility is a choice, how are you humbling yourself each day? · Humility involves serving others, so how are you serving those at home, work, school, or any other areas of life?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

We continue our journey through 1 Peter 3. As we saw last week, God gave us the beautiful picture of how a husband and wife are to live out their marriage relationship in a manner that honors Him. God wants us to understand that what He laid out for the husband-and-wife relationship is not just for the married couple. God also led Peter to wr...

Day 2

Today we focus on the second characteristic God commands us to have as Christians. God tells us in 1 Peter 3:8 that we are also to be sympathetic, so we are to sympathize with each other. To be sympathetic means we must have a heart of compassion and kindness toward each other. As we show God’s compassion and kindness, we also have to guard a...

Day 3

God wants our lives to look starkly different than the world in which we live. If we look like the world, we’re either still lost in our sin or remaining incredibly immature in our walk with Christ (1 Corinthians 2:14 & 1 Corinthians 3:1–3). So, the third characteristic God lays out for us is to be brotherly. God commanded us to love each oth...

Day 5

The attitude God lays out for us today in 1 Peter 3:9 is for us to make sure we’re not returning evil for evil or insult for insult, but giving a blessing instead. God never wants us repaying evil for evil. God also doesn’t want us retaliating with insults when people insult us. Instead, God says to pay people back with a blessing. In our fle...

Day 6

The six characteristics God has called all of us to walk in when we’re willing to obey them, God promises His blessing. God’s Word says in 1 Peter 3:9, …for you were called for the very purpose that you might inherit a blessing. Too often, we ask for God’s blessing instead of paying attention to His Word, where He clearly reveals how to recei...

Day 7

In 1 Peter 3:10–12, God has Peter quote Psalm 34:12–16. In Psalms 34:12, a question is asked: “Does anyone want to live a life that is long and prosperous?” Of course, the obvious answer is “yes.” So, God, through the psalmist and then through Peter, continues to tell us how to live a life that He blesses. First, God commands that we guard ou...
