Day 7

Scripture to Read: Romans 8:12–13

What an incredible week, and hopefully, all of us have been encouraged and challenged as God has revealed more about His Spirit and our flesh. We finish this week by reading Romans 8:12–13, So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— 13 for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live. God says we are under obligation, but then He tells us our commitment is not to our flesh. We no longer have to live according to how we feel. Don’t miss the incredible Truth God is teaching us here in Romans 8:12. We know our feelings can seem overwhelmingly powerful at times, but God tells us we do not have to submit to our feelings. Instead, our obligation is to our King because He gave His all for us. We are not obligated to God to perform because then we do what we do thinking we are earning something from God. Instead, we are motivated by God’s love, serving Him and not our flesh. We choose to live according to His Word and not how we feel. When our flesh seeks to get us to live according to how we feel, God tells us that we must die to those feelings. We must choose to crucify our flesh so that we live through His Spirit living in us. Through His Spirit, we can crucify our flesh and live victoriously.

Challenge & Application

What did God teach you about your obligations as His child? How are you fulfilling your obligations each day and choosing to walk in victory over your flesh?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

This week, we get to closely examine the battlefield all Christians live in every day of our lives. The battle we face each day is between our flesh and the Holy Spirit living in us. When we surrendered to Christ as Lord, our “old man” was crucified with Christ, as we learned in Romans 6. But prior to us surrendering to Christ, our “old man” ...

Day 2

Over the next three days, we will take some time to examine Romans 8:5–8. God tells us in Romans 8:5, For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. To be “according to the flesh” can mean two things. One, every person living on earth st...

Day 3

Today, we continue to unpack Romans 8, as God tells us in Romans 8:6, For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace. As we ended yesterday, we examined some Scriptures where God tells us that we have to be continually renewed in our minds. What we choose to think about and what we choose to allow our...

Day 4

Sometimes, God lovingly confronts us in a way that may seem harsh at first but then brings us comfort, knowing He is not giving up on us in our journey with Him. Today is one of those moments, as God tells us in Romans 8:7–8, because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is n...

Day 5

Today, God gives us clarity on the issue of being in the flesh or in the Spirit, as we have been walking through Romans 8:5–13. God tells us in Romans 8:9, However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. So, now we know...

Day 6

God’s Word is so rich, and He loves when our eyes are opened to the fullness of all we have in Him. So today, we read in Romans 8:10–11, If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ J...
