Scripture to Read: Romans 8:5–8
Over the next three days, we will take some time to examine Romans 8:5–8. God tells us in Romans 8:5, For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. To be “according to the flesh” can mean two things. One, every person living on earth still separated from Christ is lost in their sin. Their mind is always set on the flesh because their minds have been blinded by the god of this world (2 Corinthians 4:3–4), and they are being held captive by him too (2 Timothy 2:26). Now, the sad news is that we as believers can get caught up with walking “according to the flesh” as well. Note what God continues to say, though, in Romans 8:5. God says that those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh. Again, nonbelievers can only set their minds on the things of the flesh because without the power of the Holy Spirit, they have no control over their flesh. Now, we as believers have God’s Spirit living in us, but we are still capable of allowing our minds to be set on the flesh. We know this because God tells us several times in His Word that we, as His children, must be renewed in our minds (Ephesians 4:23, 2 Corinthians 10:5, Romans 12:2). We must guard our minds daily. We’ll discuss this further tomorrow.
Challenge & Application
What did God teach you today about the power of the flesh and what all believers must do?
How are you choosing to renew your mind throughout the day so you’re guarded against living fleshly?
