Scripture to Read: Romans 2:6–8
Yesterday, God showed us that our hope is in Christ and that Christ took our judgment on Himself. We also saw that the kindness of God is revealed through Christ. In His Word, God the Father continually offers hope to all mankind through our Lord Jesus Christ and today is no different. As God offers hope through Christ, He continually warns of His judgment too. In Romans 2:6–8, our Lord lays out two paths from which to choose and two different outcomes from those paths. God says to the group who chooses the path to persevere in doing good that they will receive eternal life. Those who persevere respond to God's kindness through repentance of their sins. Repentance leads to a changed life. These people's works are the evidence they have trusted in God through Christ, and their hearts have been transformed to do good works (Ephesians 2:10, Titus 2:14). The other path people choose is the path of selfish ambition and not obeying God's Truth. These people seek glory for themselves and do not respond to God's kindness. Instead, they “obey unrighteousness, wrath and indignation” (Romans 2:8). The way people live their lives reveals where they stand. Everyone responding to God's kindness through repentance has their hearts transformed through Christ and good works follow. Everyone who does not obey God's Truth but continues in their sin can expect to face the wrath of God. We must continually walk in the good works God has for us and share Him with those who still need to respond.
