Day 3

Scripture to Read: Revelation 3:2

As we saw in the first two devotions this week, Jesus had captured the image of what happened to the city of Sardis. Remember from yesterday’s devotion that the guards of Sardis trusted in the city’s steep cliffs for protection but failed to be watchmen of the city. In the same way, the church in Sardis trusted in itself and remained “dead” though they thought they were alive. The church in Sardis was much like the prodigal son. The prodigal son had physical life from his father, but he NEVER established a relationship with his father. The prodigal considered his father dead to him until the prodigal was born again. Luke 15:24 says, ”for this son of mine was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found. And they began to celebrate.” In Revelation 3:2, Jesus called the people in the church in Sardis to “wake up” before He came back. Jesus said, “Wake up, and strengthen the things that remain, which were about to die; for I have not found your deeds completed in the sight of My God.” Just like a dead person cannot accomplish anything, so this church was not producing any good works for our King. As believers, we know that God has called us to good works (Ephesians 2:10; Titus 2:14; Titus 3:8). Works do not save us, but works are the evidence of Christ’s transformational work in our lives. We must be fully surrendered to Christ so that we accomplish what God has for us to do.

Challenge & Application

1. What did God teach you today about walking in the fullness of the works He has for us to do? 2. How are you walking in good works each day so that you fulfill all God has for you to do?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

We continue our journey through Revelation. This week we focus on Revelation 3:1-6 and our Lord’s Words to the church in Sardis. As we begin, we must remember that the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ has been given in order to reach everyone who is dead in their sin. When someone who is dead in their sin hears the message of Christ, repents, ...

Day 2

We continue today in Revelation 3:1 because of our Lord’s strong words to the church in Sardis being “dead.” We have all known churches that appear to be doing well. They may have what seems like great preaching, programs, worship, and even will have big crowds, but the people who fill that church do not know our Lord. The indictment on the c...

Day 4

We know that our Lord Jesus Christ has called the church in Sardis to “wake up” because they were dead in their sin. Remember, the people in this church thought they were alive, but Jesus proclaimed them dead. If the church in Sardis did not wake up, just as their enemies had overtaken their city, so the church would suffer great loss by miss...

Day 5

Since we did not get a chance to finish with Revelation 3:3 in yesterday’s devotion, we will wrap it up today. We know Jesus told the church in Sardis that they must keep His Word and that they had to repent. The only way to come into a relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ is to recognize first that we are sinners and that we are lost in o...

Day 6

The good news today is that there were a faithful few who were still left in Sardis. These were people who had not “soiled their garments.” Jesus said in Revelation 3:4, “But you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their garments; and they will walk with Me in white, for they are worthy.” So, those believers in Sardis were pure; t...

Day 7

As we finish up Jesus’ letter to the church in Sardis, we find Jesus reminding those who are dead in their sin that they not only must “wake up” but then they must also walk in faithful endurance to Him. Living the Christian life is hard, and it is a call to die to ourselves and follow Christ no matter the cost. Jesus makes it clear that only...
