Day 2

Scripture to Read: Revelation 3:1

We continue today in Revelation 3:1 because of our Lord’s strong words to the church in Sardis being “dead.” We have all known churches that appear to be doing well. They may have what seems like great preaching, programs, worship, and even will have big crowds, but the people who fill that church do not know our Lord. The indictment on the church at Sardis is that they were “dead” because they had no relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ. They were still lost in their sin. The evidence of a “transformed life” is a life that does what God commands. Jesus makes this Truth clear in the gospels (Matthew 7:21; Matthew 7:24-27; Luke 6:46-49), in Romans 2:13, and also in James 1:22-25; James 2:14-26. There are several other places in Scripture where our Lord tells us that obedience to His Word is a true sign of the Christian life. Jesus says in Matthew 7:21, “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord, ’will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.” The history of Sardis was that its location was on top of a steep hill. The people who lived there thought their location ensured its safety from enemies. Since it seemed secure, the guards of that city failed to protect the cliffs surrounding the city and the city was overtaken twice. The more significant failure was that the church never received “life” through the gospel they heard.

Challenge & Application

1. What did God teach you today about walking in obedience to Him and His Word? 2. We must examine our lives and make sure we are walking in obedience to our Lord. How are you walking in obedience daily?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

We continue our journey through Revelation. This week we focus on Revelation 3:1-6 and our Lord’s Words to the church in Sardis. As we begin, we must remember that the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ has been given in order to reach everyone who is dead in their sin. When someone who is dead in their sin hears the message of Christ, repents, ...

Day 3

As we saw in the first two devotions this week, Jesus had captured the image of what happened to the city of Sardis. Remember from yesterday’s devotion that the guards of Sardis trusted in the city’s steep cliffs for protection but failed to be watchmen of the city. In the same way, the church in Sardis trusted in itself and remained “dead” t...

Day 4

We know that our Lord Jesus Christ has called the church in Sardis to “wake up” because they were dead in their sin. Remember, the people in this church thought they were alive, but Jesus proclaimed them dead. If the church in Sardis did not wake up, just as their enemies had overtaken their city, so the church would suffer great loss by miss...

Day 5

Since we did not get a chance to finish with Revelation 3:3 in yesterday’s devotion, we will wrap it up today. We know Jesus told the church in Sardis that they must keep His Word and that they had to repent. The only way to come into a relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ is to recognize first that we are sinners and that we are lost in o...

Day 6

The good news today is that there were a faithful few who were still left in Sardis. These were people who had not “soiled their garments.” Jesus said in Revelation 3:4, “But you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their garments; and they will walk with Me in white, for they are worthy.” So, those believers in Sardis were pure; t...

Day 7

As we finish up Jesus’ letter to the church in Sardis, we find Jesus reminding those who are dead in their sin that they not only must “wake up” but then they must also walk in faithful endurance to Him. Living the Christian life is hard, and it is a call to die to ourselves and follow Christ no matter the cost. Jesus makes it clear that only...
