Scripture to Read: Psalm 13:6
Though David, as He wrote Psalm 13, was going through a tough time, he ends this Psalm by reminding us what we must do. God had David write in Psalm 13:6, “I will sing to the Lord, because He has dealt bountifully with me.” David chose to sing praises to our Lord. As a Christian, choosing to sing is not an option because it’s a command from our Lord. So, when we as Christians sing to our Lord, we choose to be obedient. God commands us in Ephesians 5:18–19, “And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord.” People often choose to get drunk to drown their sorrows, stresses, and anxieties. But God tells us that we must not get drunk but instead, be filled with His Holy Spirit. As we submit to His Spirit and His authority, we must then speak and sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, making melody with our hearts. God changes us through singing and lifts us out of the cares of this world. God tells us again in Colossians 3:16, “Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” God’s Word must richly fill us so that we’re able to share God’s Truth with others and be encouraged ourselves through song.
