Day 2

Scripture to Read: Nehemiah 2:1-5

We all have had days of sadness. Sadness comes when we are broken-hearted over something or someone in our lives. Nehemiah mentions in Nehemiah 1:1 that he had never been sad in the presence of Artaxerxes. The reason Nehemiah had never been sad in the presence of the king is that in the courts of many ancient kings, it was forbidden to be sad in the presence of the king. So, when Artaxerxes questioned Nehemiah about his sadness, Nehemiah became frightened. Nehemiah could lose his life for being sad in the king’s presence because being in the king’s presence was considered so great that it should make anyone happy. Nehemiah’s response is one of respect for the king, and then he lays out his heart before the king. Nehemiah was honest and did not try to hide the burden he was carrying. We must do the same as believers. When we are burdened, we are to share our burdens with those we respect and trust. We need other prayer warriors in our corner. God had been preparing the king’s heart over the past four months as Nehemiah had been praying. The king asks Nehemiah in Nehemiah 2:4, “What would you request?” Nehemiah immediately prayed a quiet prayer to God. Just like Nehemiah, God also wants us practicing His presence in all areas of our lives at all times (Ephesians 6:18; Colossians 4:2; 1 Thessalonians 5:17). After praying, Nehemiah did not know what would happen but he trusted God for the outcome and shared his request with Artaxerxes.

Challenge & Application

1. What burden has God laid on your heart, and what other mature believers have you invited to join you in prayer? 2. What has God taught you about practicing His presence and trusting Him with every outcome?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

God loves for us to be totally dependent on Him and to trust Him in every area of our lives. He desires us to fellowship with Him and let our requests be made to Him as we pray. He also desires us to be flooded with His peace so that as we wait on His answer, we not become anxious. God makes this clear in Philippians 4:6-7 “Be anxious for not...

Day 3

God is always performing miracles. Sometimes we get so caught up in the busyness of life that we miss the miraculous work of God. We may see someone healed of a sickness, a surgery, or some other infirmity. Instead of seeing God’s divine handiwork, we simply give credit to the medicine or are thankful for the medical team who took care of the...

Day 4

We read in verse 9, as God led Nehemiah, he began his journey. God had placed a burden on Nehemiah’s heart to get the wall rebuilt in Jerusalem. Nehemiah had prayed for four months. God gave Nehemiah the wisdom he needed, the vision he needed, and even the specific plan to get the wall rebuilt. Nehemiah also put his faith into action by makin...

Day 5

When we consider that Nehemiah only had to wait four months before God answered his prayer, it was not a very long time to wait. Abraham was 75 years old when God gave him the promise of a son and to make him a great nation (Genesis 15). Abraham had to wait 25 years before God’s promise to him came to bear fruit (Genesis 21). Joseph was only ...

Day 6

Nehemiah, and the people the king sent with Nehemiah, had to travel 800 miles from Persia to Jerusalem. Once Nehemiah arrived in Jerusalem, the real hard work would begin to unfold. Nehemiah had to meet with the governors of the regions beyond the Euphrates River. The river was an important landmark because it separated one area from another....

Day 7

As we finish up the first half of Nehemiah 2, let’s consider what God has taught us so far this week. We know that God desires for us to rest in Him, to trust in Him, and to completely rely on Him in all areas of our lives, even when it is uncomfortable and inconvenient. We have learned we must have godly Christian friends in our lives who wi...
