Scripture to Read: Matthew 7:28–29
When Jesus had finished teaching that day, here is what God’s Word records in Matthew 7:28–29, “When Jesus had finished these words, the crowds were amazed at His teaching; 29 for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as their scribes.” The powerful Words of our Lord Jesus Christ blew away the people. They said Christ taught as “one having authority.” Many other Scriptures (Matthew 13:54, Matthew 22:33, Mark 1:22, Mark 6:2, Mark 11:18, Luke 4:32, John 7:46) record words and phrases after people heard Christ teach such as “astonished,” “amazed,” “what is this wisdom,” and “Never has a man spoken the way this man speaks.” At this point, we must examine our hearts and ask, “Am I still amazed, astonished, blown away, and recognizing the amazing authority of God’s Word as I read, study, and memorize it each day.?” God’s Word is all of that and more. God’s Word says this in Hebrews 4:12, “For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” We must examine our lives, schedules, and priorities and make sure we are hungering and thirsting for the only Word that will transform, feed, sustain, restore, and enlighten us every single day. God’s Word makes us wise, gives us all we need to rejoice in our hearts, and leads us to walk in His righteousness—it’s all that and more!
