Scripture to Read: Matthew 6:11
In the model prayer, Jesus included in Matthew 6:11, “Give us this day our daily bread.” Jesus never wants us to take for granted God’s incredible provision for our daily needs of food and water. We must never forget that God is the ONE who has given us the gifts and talents we have so that we can work and help provide for our needs. But as we work, we must thank our Lord that He is our Provider and the ONE who cares for us. Jesus also said in Matthew 6:13, “And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. [For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.’]” Just for clarification, the Scripture in brackets is not in some early manuscripts but is found in later manuscripts. So, they placed it in brackets to say that it may or may not have been in the original text of God’s Word. When Jesus says “temptation,” it literally means a test. We know this because God never tempts us (James 1:13). Asking God to fill us with His Holy Spirit is something we do because we can never face any test without His strength and power. The good news is that God promised never to let us be tempted beyond what we’re able but with the temptation, He is the ONE who provides the way of escape so that we’re able to overcome it (1 Corinthians 10:13). God also reminds us to wear His armor (Ephesians 6:10–18) so we are ready for the daily battles.
