Day 3

Scripture to Read: Matthew 6:7

Prayer is our incredible privilege to fellowship with our Lord God Almighty. Our Lord makes it clear, though, that He does not want us to “use meaningless repetition.” We sometimes wonder why we struggle with prayer because it often seems hard. God tells us in Romans 8:26–27, “In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; 27 and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.” God tells us we’re weak but that His Spirit living in us helps us in our weakness. What’s our weakness? Prayer. It’s not only a weakness, but we often don’t even know what to pray. The good news is that the Holy Spirit is praying for us, with us, and through us. The other part of that good news is that the Holy Spirit prays exactly according to God the Father’s perfect will. So, though we are weak, God wants us to come and fellowship with Him and trust that He will hear us because His Holy Spirit takes our prayers and makes them perfect in God the Father’s presence. Therefore, we should never worry about saying exactly the right prayer but trust that God loves us, and He loves when we fellowship with Him through prayer. As we pray, we join God’s Spirit as He’s already praying in God the Father’s presence—indeed, it is an incredible privilege.

Day 2

Our Lord Jesus is teaching us about prayer, and He’s reminding us that to deepen our intimacy with our Heavenly Father, we must have times of one-on-one conversation with Him with no one else around. Jesus said in Matthew 6:6, “But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your ...

Our prayer life is so important to God that He’s not only given us His Holy Spirit to pray in, for, and through us, but our Lord Jesus Christ is pr...

Day 5

The prayer Jesus laid out in Matthew 6:9–13 is often called “the Lord’s prayer,” but the actual “Lord’s prayer” is found in John 17. What our Lord Jesus Christ gave us in Matthew 6:9–13 is more accurately called “The model prayer” because our Lord gave us a guide to lead us before God the Father’s throne of grace. Our Lord starts by saying in...

Day 6

In the model prayer, Jesus included in Matthew 6:11, “Give us this day our daily bread.” Jesus never wants us to take for granted God’s incredible provision for our daily needs of food and water. We must never forget that God is the ONE who has given us the gifts and talents we have so that we can work and help provide for our needs. But as w...

Day 7

Jesus dealt with forgiveness in the model prayer as well. Jesus said in Matthew 6:12, “And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.” Then, Jesus took the issue of forgiveness one step further in Matthew 6:14–15, “For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do...
