Scripture to Read: Luke 16:16–18
Jesus then reminded everyone who was there, and this is a great reminder for us today, that God’s Word can never be overturned by anything or anyone. We read in Luke 16:16–18, “The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John; since that time the gospel of the kingdom of God has been preached, and everyone is forcing his way into it. 17 But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one stroke of a letter of the Law to fail. 18 Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries one who is divorced from a husband commits adultery.” Jesus pointed out that God’s plan to save mankind from the power and penalty of sin was promised and proclaimed through God’s Law and the Prophets. As Christ continued, He made it clear that God the Father’s promise was still being preached and that the good news calls for a response. It’s not that we can force our way into the kingdom of God; it’s that God’s invitation calls for complete submission and obedience to Him. It’s not a decision anyone should ever take lightly. Then, Jesus spoke of the reliability of God’s Word. He made it clear that Scripture is fully reliable and that God does not discard His Word. That means we must take God’s commands seriously, not as “suggestions” but as Truth, and that His Truth stands forever. As an example, Jesus used the marriage relationship to remind everyone that the marriage covenant is holy before God and must be treated as such.
