Scripture to Read: Luke 16:5–7
The manager then took action because he knew his time as manager was short. We read in Luke 16:5–7, “And he summoned each one of his master’s debtors, and he began saying to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ 6 And he said, ‘A hundred measures of oil.’ And he said to him, ‘Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.’ 7 Then he said to another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ And he said, ‘A hundred measures of wheat.’ He *said to him, ‘Take your bill, and write eighty.’” The manager acted quickly because he knew his consequences were near. Our Lord Jesus Christ wants us, as believers, to treat God’s call upon our lives with this same urgency. We don’t need to live our lives like we have all the time in the world. We must live as if Jesus died yesterday, rose again today, and is coming back tomorrow. When we live as if Jesus’ return is far out in the future, we lose sight of the lost souls around us who need to hear the good news of the gospel of Christ. We fall into a false belief that we have plenty of time to fulfill God’s call on our lives. Just as the manager was dealing with someone else’s resources, God has given us much to care for while we’re here. He’s given us this life to live, money He’s entrusted to us, influence He’s given us, opportunities He’s opened up for us, and relationships He has blessed us with. We must steward them all well.
