Scripture to Read: Luke 16:3–4
The manager knew he had been dishonest and he was pretty sure he was going to get fired. Jesus shared this in Luke16:3–4, “The manager said to himself, ‘What shall I do, since my master is taking the management away from me? I am not strong enough to dig; I am ashamed to beg. 4 I know what I shall do, so that when I am removed from the management people will welcome me into their homes.’” The manager did a quick assessment of his life. He knew he was not strong enough to dig ditches every day and he knew he was too proud to become a beggar. So, the manager began to develop a plan to win the hearts of those who did business with the rich man through him. At this point, Jesus was preparing His listeners for the next part of His parable. Jesus was letting His listeners know that the manager was going to use the remaining time he had as a manager to use his access to the rich man’s business deals and to plan ahead for what would happen to him when he got fired. The manager was in trouble, but even in his troubles he knew he needed to set in motion a plan that would hopefully prove helpful to him. The manager deserved to be fired, for he had not been honest in handling the rich man’s business. But what we can learn from this is that we must never procrastinate in repenting of our sins, obeying our Lord, and walking in His wisdom.
