Scripture to Read: John 4:46–54
As we read John 4:46–48, we see that Jesus is back in Cana of Galilee and that many people simply followed Jesus because they wanted to see another miracle. They did not believe in Jesus as Lord but were looking to be amazed at His power. The royal official had come some 20 miles from Capernaum to plead with Jesus for His mercy to be given to his dying son. In John 4:48, Jesus lovingly rebukes the people who were following Him because they only wanted to see more miracles. The royal official could have made his case that his son was of royalty and was worthy of a miracle because of his heritage, but he didn’t do that. The royal official only pleaded with Jesus that his son was at death’s door. Jesus tested the royal official’s faith by simply saying in John 4:50, “Go; your son lives.” The royal official’s faith was genuine, for we also read in John 4:50, The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and started off. The royal official was not looking for a show or to be impressed with Jesus’ power; he knew in his heart that Jesus could save his son and that was enough. As the royal official got back close to home, his slaves met him and gave him the good news that his son’s fever had left him. The royal official and his family placed their faith in Jesus according to John 4:53. Remember, genuine faith is believing without seeing (Hebrews 11:1).
Challenge & Application
