Scripture to Read: John 4:31–34
Jesus is God, but He still needed daily fellowship with God the Father to accomplish all He was sent to do. God had John to continue to record what happened in Jesus’ life, and we read in John 4:31–34, Meanwhile the disciples were urging Him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.” 32 But He said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” 33 So the disciples were saying to one another, “No one brought Him anything to eat, did he?” 34 Jesus *said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work. Jesus confirmed for His disciples that His sole purpose was to do the will of the Father and fulfill the work He was sent to accomplish. Jesus was always focused on the Father’s will. Even as God led David to write Psalm 40, we see a Messianic passage in Psalm 40:7–8, Then I said “Behold, I come; In the scroll of the book it is written of me. 8 I delight to do Your will, O my God; Your Law is within my heart.” Jesus’ delight was in doing God the Father’s perfect will. Even when Jesus was tempted by Satan in the wildnesses, He told Satan in Matthew 4:4, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.”—this is a quote from Deuteronomy 8:3. We must live according to God’s Word each day, knowing His Word reveals His will.
Challenge & Application
• What was Jesus’ desire each day of His life, and why was this His desire?
• We are to follow our Lord’s example; so, how do we walk in God’s will each day to accomplish what He’s designed us to do?
