Scripture to Read: John 21:4–8
Peter and some of the other disciples, including John, had fished all night and now the day was breaking. God had John record in John 21:4–8, But when the day was now breaking, Jesus stood on the beach; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5 So Jesus *said to them, “Children, you do not have any fish, do you?” They answered Him, “No.” 6 And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right-hand side of the boat and you will find a catch.” So they cast, and then they were not able to haul it in because of the great number of fish. 7 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved *said to Peter, “It is the Lord.” So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put his outer garment on (for he was stripped for work), and threw himself into the sea. 8 But the other disciples came in the little boat, for they were not far from the land, but about one hundred yards away, dragging the net full of fish. Jesus had shown up on the shore, but the disciples didn’t know it was Him. Jesus knew they hadn’t caught anything, so He challenged them to cast the net on the right-hand side of the boat. Though the disciples didn’t know it was Jesus, they still did as Jesus had directed. The moment the fish filled the net, John (the disciple whom Jesus loved) knew it was Jesus, and he told Peter. Peter couldn’t wait, so he jumped into the sea and swam to shore.
Challenge & Application
• The disciples did not know Jesus was the man on shore, but they followed His suggestion without question: Why do you think they did?
• After hearing it was Jesus, Peter dove into the sea to swim to shore; how does your passion for our Lord and His Word compare?
