Day 5

Scripture to Read: John 2:9–10

As we continue our walk through the Book of John, we read in John 2:9–10, “When the headwaiter tasted the water which had become wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter *called the bridegroom, 10 and *said to him, ‘Every man serves the good wine first, and when the people have drunk freely, then he serves the poorer wine; but you have kept the good wine until now.’” Before we focus on the headwaiter, we must go back to the servant's obedience to what Jesus told them to do in John 2:8. Jesus said to the servants, “Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter.” Those servants showed incredible faith in Jesus. They knew they had placed water in the waterpots and knew they would be severely punished if they took water to the headwaiter. But they obeyed Jesus, showing their faith in what only He could do. We must remember that what Jesus says often seems like foolishness to the world. God’s Word even tells us in 1 Corinthians 1:18, “For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” The servants saw the power of God while the headwaiter had no clue where the wine had come from. God’s Truth is often hidden from the lost because they are blinded by their sin and by “the god of this world” (2 Corinthians 4:3–4). We must keep our eyes open to God’s Truth.

Challenge & Application

• How did the servants show their Faith in Christ? • How do you show your faith in Christ each day?

Day 1

Jesus’ ministry was about to begin, as recorded in the Book of John. We read in John 2:1–2, “On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there; 2 and both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding.” Jesus, His disciples, and Mary (the mother of Jesus) were all part of this wedding celebration...

Day 2

In Jesus’ day, probably even more so than today, the wedding celebration was an incredibly important part of the wedding. We read in John 2:3–4, “When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus *said to Him, ‘They have no wine.’ 4 And Jesus *said to her, ‘Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come.’” In David Guzik’s commen...

Day 3

When Jesus addressed Mary in John 2:4, He said, “Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come.” Most people today would say this sounds disrespectful, but we must understand the culture of Jesus’ day. Most commentators agree on this point—that what Jesus said to Mary was a term of respect. We don’t have any word in the E...

Day 4

We read in John 2:5–8, “His mother *said to the servants, ‘Whatever He says to you, do it.’ 6 Now there were six stone waterpots set there for the Jewish custom of purification, containing twenty or thirty gallons each. 7 Jesus *said to them, ‘Fill the waterpots with water.’ So they filled them up to the brim. 8 And He *said to them, ‘Draw so...

Day 6

Many Christians have tried to say that what Jesus made was not really wine but grape juice. The problem with that line of thought is that we have to change God’s Word. The reason Christians today feel like it could not be wine is due to the way wine is made today. But, when we study the culture of Christ’s day, it is not the same as today. Sp...

Day 7

In John 2:11–12, we read this: “This beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him. 12 After this He went down to Capernaum, He and His mother and His brothers and His disciples; and they stayed there a few days.” According to God’s Word, Jesus had just performed His first mir...
