Day 4

Scripture to Read: John 2:5–8

We read in John 2:5–8, “His mother *said to the servants, ‘Whatever He says to you, do it.’ 6 Now there were six stone waterpots set there for the Jewish custom of purification, containing twenty or thirty gallons each. 7 Jesus *said to them, ‘Fill the waterpots with water.’ So they filled them up to the brim. 8 And He *said to them, ‘Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter.’ So they took it to him.” Mary’s words, “Whatever He says to you, do it,” could not ring more true then or now. Though Mary did not say much, we know that we must obey our Lord and His Word. Jesus had much to say about walking in obedience to Him, and the Holy Spirit led the apostles to write about our obedience to our Lord. We find (in Matthew 7:24, Luke 6:47–48, Matthew 16:18, Acts 4:19, Acts 5:29, Romans 6:16, 2 Peter 2:19, and James 1:22–25) God telling us that obedience is an act of our will, and we must choose who or what we obey. Obedience is an act of love for our Lord, for God said through John in 1 John 2:5, “but whoever keeps His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected. By this we know that we are in Him.” God’s love is perfected in us through our obedience to Him and His Word. The servants did as Jesus told them to do—they did not question, they did not make suggestions, they simply obeyed.

Day 1

Jesus’ ministry was about to begin, as recorded in the Book of John. We read in John 2:1–2, “On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there; 2 and both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding.” Jesus, His disciples, and Mary (the mother of Jesus) were all part of this wedding celebration...

Day 2

In Jesus’ day, probably even more so than today, the wedding celebration was an incredibly important part of the wedding. We read in John 2:3–4, “When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus *said to Him, ‘They have no wine.’ 4 And Jesus *said to her, ‘Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come.’” In David Guzik’s commen...

Day 3

When Jesus addressed Mary in John 2:4, He said, “Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come.” Most people today would say this sounds disrespectful, but we must understand the culture of Jesus’ day. Most commentators agree on this point—that what Jesus said to Mary was a term of respect. We don’t have any word in the E...

Day 5

As we continue our walk through the Book of John, we read in John 2:9–10, “When the headwaiter tasted the water which had become wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter *called the bridegroom, 10 and *said to him, ‘Every man serves the good wine first, and when the people have ...

Day 6

Many Christians have tried to say that what Jesus made was not really wine but grape juice. The problem with that line of thought is that we have to change God’s Word. The reason Christians today feel like it could not be wine is due to the way wine is made today. But, when we study the culture of Christ’s day, it is not the same as today. Sp...

Day 7

In John 2:11–12, we read this: “This beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him. 12 After this He went down to Capernaum, He and His mother and His brothers and His disciples; and they stayed there a few days.” According to God’s Word, Jesus had just performed His first mir...
