Scripture to Read: John 2:1–2
Jesus’ ministry was about to begin, as recorded in the Book of John. We read in John 2:1–2, “On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there; 2 and both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding.” Jesus, His disciples, and Mary (the mother of Jesus) were all part of this wedding celebration. When someone is invited to a wedding, they are usually either good friends with the bride, the groom, or possibly both, or they are part of the bride or groom's family. Strangers are never invited to a wedding celebration because it is a very special time for the bride and groom as God unites them together as husband and wife. Jesus, His mother, and even the disciples must have been good friends of the bride or groom. This may seem unimportant, but it’s a great reminder for us to be people who strive to work on our friendships and to be sure we have good reputations among the people we know. Our witness for our Lord Jesus Christ depends on us building friendships with others and treating them with the highest respect. Jesus is our perfect example of striving to be friends with everyone He encountered. We know the religious leaders hated Jesus, and they even accused Him of hanging with the wrong people in Matthew 11:19, “… Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!” But that is who Jesus called us to reach with His Gospel. May we do well in following Jesus’ example.
