Day 3

Scripture to Read: John 14:16–17

Jesus knows He will be leaving the disciples soon. He knows His earthly ministry is going to end, and though He has told the disciples about this several times, He knows that they still do not fully understand. The beauty about our Lord, though, is that He continues to give the disciples words of encouragement along with His words of challenge. Jesus tells them in John 14:16–17, “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; 17 that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.” It’s so awesome how our Lord tells the disciples that He is going to ask the Father to send “another Helper.” The word for “Helper” can also be translated as Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor, Counselor, and Strengthener. God the Holy Spirit is all of these to us and much more. The only way to receive the Holy Spirit is through a surrendered life to Jesus as Lord and Savior. That is why Jesus told the disciples that there are those in this world who cannot receive the Holy Spirit—they can’t receive Him due to their unwillingness to humble themselves and surrender to Christ as King. God tells us in Ephesians 4:18 that the lost are “being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart.”

Challenge & Application

• Why did Jesus tell His disciples about His Holy Spirit, and why is this still encouraging for us today? • How have you experienced the Holy Spirit as Helper, Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor, Counselor, and Strengthener?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

Our prayer lives are our lifeline to our intimacy with our Heavenly Father through our Lord Jesus Christ. The incredible privilege we have of open access to our Heavenly Father is only made possible because of Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection. God tells us in Ephesians 2:18, "for through Him we both have our access in one Spirit to th...

Day 2

God desires that we pray about everything and not withhold anything from Him. He already knows our hearts, so there is no reason not to be honest in our prayers as we seek Him. He may not answer with a “yes,” but that does not mean He’s not listening and ministering to us as we seek Him each day. Jesus sought the Father about everything; ther...

Jesus did not want His disciples to feel hopeless as they would watch Him being led to the cross. Jesus knew this would be an incredibly difficult time for all eleven of them. Jesus reassured them that He would not leave them as orphans. Jesus said in John 14:18, “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.” Jesus knew they would fee...

Day 5

Jesus knew His presence on earth after He was raised from the dead would be for a very short time, and then He would ascend into heaven. So, Jesus told His disciples in John 14:19–20, “After a little while the world will no longer see Me, but you will see Me; because I live, you will live also. 20 In that day you will know that I am in My Fat...

Day 6

Jesus had already told His disciples (in John 14:15) that obedience to Him is the actual proof that we love Him. Jesus comes back to this same truth in John 14:21–25, “He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him.” 22 Juda...

Day 7

Jesus gave His disciples such incredible words of encouragement that are words of encouragement for us as well. Jesus said in John 14:26–31, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to y...
