Scripture to Read: John 13:12–15
Jesus had washed the disciples’ feet, and then He took His lesson to another level. We read in John 13:12–15, So when He had washed their feet, and taken His garments and reclined at the table again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? 13 You call Me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am. 14 If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you.” Jesus challenged His disciples to examine their hearts and their willingness to follow His example. Jesus is their Teacher and Lord; if He humbled Himself and washed their feet, they must be willing to do the same to each other. The same Truth is still true today. For all of us who call Jesus our Lord, we must examine our lives daily and ask ourselves if we are serving our Lord well by serving those around us. If we are unwilling to humble ourselves and serve, then we are not surrendered to our King. Serving is humbling, and it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking we deserve to be served. But a life fully surrendered to Christ is one in which we are willing to do anything our Lord was willing to do. Serving is never glamorous and usually goes completely unnoticed, but when we serve, we honor our Lord Jesus Christ and help others see Him for Who He is.
