Scripture to Read: John 13:9–11
Peter still struggled to understand what Jesus was doing by washing his feet. We read in John 13:9–11, Simon Peter *said to Him, “Lord, then wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head.” 10 Jesus *said to him, “He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you.” 11 For He knew the one who was betraying Him; for this reason He said, “Not all of you are clean.” Though Jesus will explain further why He washed their feet and the example He has given them, at this point in the Scripture, Jesus is trying to help Peter see that a complete cleansing is only needed once. Jesus let Peter know that because Peter was willing to follow Jesus, Jesus had cleansed him and the other disciples completely, except for Judas. Judas was unwilling to be cleansed. After someone has been washed clean, they must continually have their feet washed in their ongoing fellowship with and trust in Jesus. In other words, we must die to and crucify daily our fleshly desires (Galatians 5:19–21) and choose to walk in obedience to our Lord and His Word. When we surrendered to Christ as Lord, we were cleansed completely of all sin, for all time (Colossians 1:13–14, Colossians 2:13–14), but we know we sin daily, so we must confess (1 John 1:9) our sins to our Lord and then thank Him for His forgiveness, knowing He has cleansed and purified us as His children.
Challenge & Application
• Why did Jesus tell Peter that he did not need a bath but only needed his feet washed?
• How are you having your feet washed by our Lord and staying in right fellowship with Him daily?
