Scripture to Read: John 13:3–5
Jesus was and is God, so He had full knowledge of all God the Father had called Him to fulfill while here on earth. We read in John 13:3, Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come forth from God and was going back to God. Jesus knew God the Father had given Him all authority and had placed Him far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. 22 And He put all things in subjection under His feet (Ephesians 1:21–22). Even though Jesus knew all of this and deserved to have everyone bow before Him as God and King, He humbled Himself (Philippians 2:7–8). We read in John 13:4–5, *got up from supper, and *laid aside His garments; and taking a towel, He girded Himself. 5 Then He *poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. In the days of Jesus, the foot-washer was the lowest of all the servants in any household. Though Jesus deserved all praise, honor, glory, worship, and so much more, He took the role of the foot-washer and began to wash the disciples’ feet. Jesus is our perfect example of what we must do every day of our lives. God has called all of us to a life of humble service. We must humble ourselves and serve our King well by serving others.
