Scripture to Read: Hebrews 8:9
God continues today to clarify for us why His first covenant was weak. It’s not that God’s Word
is ever weak, but it’s the fact that we, as humans, are weak and unable to keep God’s covenant. God even says in Hebrews 8:9 that the Israelites, who God took
by the hand and led them out of Egypt, could not keep His covenant. We may be thinking, “Well, maybe God’s covenant is just too hard to keep.” God’s covenant being too hard to keep is not the problem. The problem is that our flesh is bent toward sin and sinful actions; therefore, without God living in us, there is no way anyone could keep all of God’s covenant. God even refers to this in James 2:10, “For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.” So, even if any one of us could keep ALL of God’s covenant, if we failed in just one of God’s Laws, we become guilty of breaking ALL of God’s Law. Knowing we can’t keep all of God’s Law shows us how deeply we need Christ, who is the Only One who lived a perfect, sinless life. God makes this clear in Romans 8:3 “For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: send- ing His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh.” God made it possible for our sin to be wiped clean through Christ.
