Scripture to Read: Hebrews 4:12
As we read Hebrews 4:12, it seems like there is a shift in thought from what God had the writer of Hebrews writing. But that is not the case. God is making the point that with everything that has been written so far, that this information is not for mere intellectual knowledge, but that it is the Word of God and that it needs to be obeyed. The reason God’s Word must be obeyed is that it is living, active, and full of power. God, by His Word, spoke everything into existence. God’s Word is so powerful that God has the longest chapter in His Word, Psalm 119, layout for us the incredible things God’s Word does for everyone who obeys His Word. For instance, we keep our way pure, by obeying His Word (Psalm 119:9), we stay away from sin, by obeying His Word (Psalm 119:11), His Word is our powerful counselor (Psalm 119:24), His Word gives us strength (Psalm 119:28), His Word revives us (Psalm 119:93), His Word lights our way in life and gives us understanding (Psalm 119:105, 130) and so much more. God’s Word also pierces the soul (our mind, our will, and our emotions) and spirit. Without Christ, our spirit is dead, but Christ gives our spirit life through His Holy Spirit. This is why we must renew our minds (Romans 12:2; Ephesians 4:23) daily through His Word. God’s Word must not just be read daily but obeyed, so we honor our Lord in all we do.
