Scripture to Read: Hebrews 4:1-2
We see today that Hebrews 4:1 begins with the word “therefore,” so we know that we are considering all that God has shared with us so far in Hebrews 1, 2, and 3. We have to remember that Hebrews was written as a letter and that there were no chapters and verses when it was first written. So God is leading the writer of Hebrews to continue to teach us, using the children of Israel as an example of what we must not do. God tells us in Hebrews 4:1 that the promise of entering His rest remains today because it is offered through a relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ. God also tells us to have a healthy fear for those who might fail to choose Christ and, therefore, totally miss God’s rest. Real rest and peace are only found in Christ, and anyone who chooses to refuse Christ as Lord will live in unrest and torment for all eternity. To have a healthy fear for those who do not know Christ yet is wonderful because it spurs us to share our faith with everyone, so they have the opportunity to know Christ as we do. The Good News, in Hebrews 4:2, is what has been preached throughout the ages, and which we have heard as well. The sad news is that the Israelites, and millions of others after them, also heard the Good News, but because they chose not to believe it, by faith, this Good News did them no good. Therefore they died in their sin.
