Scripture to Read: Genesis 6:1-4
As we begin today, we need always to remember that the result of sin always brings death (Romans 6:23, James 1:14-15). As we examine Genesis 6 and Genesis 7 this week, we will see the result of mankind’s sin. In Genesis 6, God paints a pretty discouraging picture for us of how corrupt and sinful mankind had become. The human population had been multiplying and filling the earth as God had commanded in Genesis 1:28. With the multiplication of mankind, the sad news was that humanity’s sinfulness increased as well. In Genesis 6:2, God’s Word says, the sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive. And they took as their wives any they chose.” So who were these “sons of God?” The phrase: “sons of God” is clearly used as a reference to angels in Job 1:6, 2:1, & 38:7. The first two references in Job 1 and Job 2 are used as the sons of God and Satan present themselves before the Lord. The third reference, in Job 38:7, is used as God lovingly rebukes Job and asks Job if he was present when God first created everything. So, in Genesis 6:4, God clearly shows us that these evil angels slept with women, and their offspring (children) were called the “Nephilim,” which means “fallen ones.” This union between these evil angels and these women was completely outside of God’s will. God always brings judgment on sin; that is why we must daily submit to Him and His Word to stay in right fellowship with Him.
Challenge & Application
1. What did God teach you today about sin and about the sinfulness of mankind in Genesis 6?
2. How are you guarding against the temptations you face each day? (For help, read 1 Corinthians 10:13; James 1:13-16, 1 John 5:4.)
