Scripture to Read: Genesis 39:10-18
As we continue to examine the spiritual battle Joseph was in and faced each day, we need to know that Potiphar's wife was simply a pawn in the hands of the spiritual forces of wickedness. God shows us in Ephesians 2:1-3 that lost people are in the hands of the enemy and don’t even know it. We also read the same truth in 2 Timothy 2:25-26, where we read how believers are to gently correct the lost because they are being held captive by the devil's snare to do his will. So, Potiphar’s wife was simply carrying out the will of the spiritual forces of darkness. Potiphar's wife began to build her case against Joseph. First, she called together the men of the house and told them her story, that Joseph had come into her room to lay with her. Second, she waited for her husband and told him the same story. All Joseph could do was know that his conscience was clear before his Lord. God tells us, in 1 Peter 3:16-18, that we must live in such a way that our conscience is clear, even when we’re falsely accused. Joseph knew he would suffer; he just didn’t know what that would look like for him. God tells us again when we are wrongly accused how we ought to respond in 1 Peter 2:18-20. God says something very similar in 1 Peter 3:16-17. So, we’re to be submissive, show respect, and keep a good conscience no matter what others might do to us or say about us.
Challenge & Application
1. What did God teach you today about how to act and react when wrongly accused? What did God teach you about how lost people will act and why?
2. How are you living your life so that your conscience is clear?
