Day 4

Scripture to Read: Genesis 39:6-9

At the end of Genesis 39:6, God has Moses write that Joseph was handsome, not just his face but that Joseph was also well built. Before we move forward, we must know that anytime God is mightily at work, the spiritual forces of wickedness are also at work seeking to distract and destroy God’s children. God points this out clearly in Ephesians 6:10-18. If we don’t recognize that there is a spiritual battle going on, then we will be taken down by the temptations of our enemy. The spiritual forces of darkness tempted Joseph through Potiphar’s wife. She was incredibly blatant about her pursuit of Joseph too. Joseph’s response shows us how intimate a relationship Joseph had with our Lord. Joseph reminded Potiphar’s wife that her husband had put Joseph in charge of everything that Potiphar owned. The only thing that Potiphar had withheld from Joseph was his wife. Let’s be sure and NOT miss what Joseph said. Joseph does NOT say, “how could I sin against my master and you?” Instead, Joseph said in Genesis 39:9, “How then could I do this great evil and sin against God?” Joseph proclaimed his loyalty to His true Master and King. Joseph had to have a strong walk with our Lord to take such a bold stand. Since we do not know how much time passed since being sold into slavery, we know from Genesis 37:2 that Joseph was at least 17 years old, if not older, by this time in Genesis 39. Joseph’s boldness was from our Lord due to his intimate walk with Him.

Challenge & Application

1. What did God teach you about the battlefield we walk into each day? 2. How are you preparing for the daily battles of this life and the temptations you know you’ll face?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

As we begin our journey this week through Genesis 39, we’ll start to unpack Joseph’s life. Joseph was the eleventh born son of Jacob and the firstborn son of Jacob’s wife, Rachel. As we read Genesis 39:1-2, we are reminded that Joseph was sold into slavery by his brothers to the Ishmaelites, also called the Midianites in Scripture. The Ishmae...

Day 2

As we read Genesis 39:3-4, we see how God opened the eyes of Potiphar to see that it was God who was causing ALL that Joseph did to prosper. Interestingly, Potiphar knew it was the Lord working on Joseph’s behalf. Most Egyptians worshiped false gods, so how could Potiphar know it was the one true God working on Joseph’s behalf? Just from read...

Day 3

We know God was blessing Joseph, so Potiphar put Joseph in charge of EVERYTHING in his household except for the food he ate. God poured out His abundant favor on Joseph and used Joseph as His instrument of righteousness in Potiphar’s house. As we walk with our Lord each day, we need to make sure we work in such a way that others see the handi...

Day 5

Today we see that the spiritual forces of darkness were using Potiphar’s wife DAILY to tempt Joseph. BUT we clearly see in Genesis 39:10 that Joseph chose not to listen to her. We know that the enemy lies in wait, just like God’s Word says in 1 Peter 5:8, Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roa...

Day 6

As we continue to examine the spiritual battle Joseph was in and faced each day, we need to know that Potiphar's wife was simply a pawn in the hands of the spiritual forces of wickedness. God shows us in Ephesians 2:1-3 that lost people are in the hands of the enemy and don’t even know it. We also read the same truth in 2 Timothy 2:25-26, whe...

Day 7

After Potiphar heard the words of his wife, needless to say, he was angry. But his anger may not have been toward Joseph. Potiphar’s anger may have been because he knew that his wife’s accusations against Joseph were false. Potiphar knew of Joseph’s relationship with God and how Joseph honored God through the way he worked. Potiphar also knew...
