Day 2

Scripture to Read: Genesis 39:3-4

As we read Genesis 39:3-4, we see how God opened the eyes of Potiphar to see that it was God who was causing ALL that Joseph did to prosper. Interestingly, Potiphar knew it was the Lord working on Joseph’s behalf. Most Egyptians worshiped false gods, so how could Potiphar know it was the one true God working on Joseph’s behalf? Just from reading Genesis 39:1-6, we don't know that Joseph was a verbal witness to God's handiwork in his life. But we have to imagine that Joseph was declaring his love for God and sharing with Potiphar that God was working on his behalf. When we go through hard times, we need to openly declare how we trust our Lord and His work in our situation. We also need to continually give thanks to our Lord, knowing He is actively working on our behalf. Now, we know that Joseph trusted God as he served in Potiphar’s house. We also know Joseph did his work as unto our Lord because Potiphar saw the difference in Joseph’s work ethic and how God blessed Joseph’s work. God would never have blessed Joseph’s work if Joseph had been whining and complaining and not fully engaged in his work. Potiphar loved Joseph’s work ethic, but what Potiphar loved even more was seeing God bless Joseph and that Potiphar was reaping those blessings from God as well. As followers of our Lord Jesus Christ, we must also live out God’s truth each day. Anyone watching our lives should see the difference our Lord makes by how we do our work.

Challenge & Application

1. What did God teach you about how to do your work and who you’re actually working for each day? 2. How are you honoring our Lord through your work (at home, at school, at your job, in other talents, etc…)?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

As we begin our journey this week through Genesis 39, we’ll start to unpack Joseph’s life. Joseph was the eleventh born son of Jacob and the firstborn son of Jacob’s wife, Rachel. As we read Genesis 39:1-2, we are reminded that Joseph was sold into slavery by his brothers to the Ishmaelites, also called the Midianites in Scripture. The Ishmae...

Day 3

We know God was blessing Joseph, so Potiphar put Joseph in charge of EVERYTHING in his household except for the food he ate. God poured out His abundant favor on Joseph and used Joseph as His instrument of righteousness in Potiphar’s house. As we walk with our Lord each day, we need to make sure we work in such a way that others see the handi...

Day 4

At the end of Genesis 39:6, God has Moses write that Joseph was handsome, not just his face but that Joseph was also well built. Before we move forward, we must know that anytime God is mightily at work, the spiritual forces of wickedness are also at work seeking to distract and destroy God’s children. God points this out clearly in Ephesians...

Day 5

Today we see that the spiritual forces of darkness were using Potiphar’s wife DAILY to tempt Joseph. BUT we clearly see in Genesis 39:10 that Joseph chose not to listen to her. We know that the enemy lies in wait, just like God’s Word says in 1 Peter 5:8, Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roa...

Day 6

As we continue to examine the spiritual battle Joseph was in and faced each day, we need to know that Potiphar's wife was simply a pawn in the hands of the spiritual forces of wickedness. God shows us in Ephesians 2:1-3 that lost people are in the hands of the enemy and don’t even know it. We also read the same truth in 2 Timothy 2:25-26, whe...

Day 7

After Potiphar heard the words of his wife, needless to say, he was angry. But his anger may not have been toward Joseph. Potiphar’s anger may have been because he knew that his wife’s accusations against Joseph were false. Potiphar knew of Joseph’s relationship with God and how Joseph honored God through the way he worked. Potiphar also knew...
