Scripture to Read: Genesis 20:1-18
In Genesis 20, we read how Abraham and Sarah continued to move. Even though Abraham is known as a man of great faith (Hebrews 11:8-19), here in Genesis 20, Abraham showed his disbelief that the Lord could protect Him from the pagan kings in the land. Because Abraham doubted God’s protection, he told Sarah that they should call each other brother and sister. When King Abimelech approached Abraham, Abraham said that Sarah was his sister and offered Sarah to Abimelech as a gesture of peace and goodwill. Abimelech accepted Abrahams offer and took Sarah. BUT the Lord spoke to King Abimelech in a dream, and God brought judgment on Abimelech and his people for the sin of taking Sarah. The Lord revealed to Abimelech who Sarah was and that she was Abraham’s wife. Abimelech immediately responded to Gods warning and returned Sarah to Abraham. Abimelech also rebuked Abraham for putting him and his people in such a horrible situation. In Genesis 20:14,Abimelech took sheep and oxen, and male servants and female servants, and gave them to Abraham, and returned Sarah his wife to him.” Abimelech made things right and after Abraham prayed for him, God healed Abimelech, his wife, and his female servants to have children again because God had made them all infertile. Gods protection and provision are always evident when we walk in close fellowship with Him. But, if we choose to take matters into our own hands and trust our weak feelings, we will miss the fullness of Him and suffer the consequences.
