Scripture to Read: Genesis 19:31-38
In Genesis 19:31-38, we need to make sure we do not miss a few things going on. First, we see that out of fear and disobedience, Lots daughters question if they would ever marry and have children. Why Lot’s daughters think they could each never find a husband and have children with them is a mystery. We know that both of their fiancés were killed in the city of Sodom when God poured out His judgment, but that’s not a reason to believe they would not each eventually find another man to love them and to be their husbands. They even go so far as to say something as ridiculous as this in Genesis 19:31; there is not a man on earth to come in to us after the manner of all the earth. For these two to even think there was not another man that God could provide for them shows how weak a relationship they each had, or did not have, with God. Again, because of their fear and disobedience, they decide to take matters into their own hands. They choose to get their father, Lot, drunk and then sleep with him to each have a child by their dad. The firstborn daughter had a son and she named him Moab. The second-born daughter had a son, and she named him Ben-ammi. What Lot’s daughters did was sin, no doubt. Their sin resulted in two sons who became two people groups who constantly stood against Israel and still do today. They are now the modern-day Syrians. Sin brings death!
