Day 5

Scripture to Read: Exodus 19:14–17

As we begin today, read Exodus 19:14–17 to prepare for what God will show you. “14 So Moses went down from the mountain to the people and consecrated the people, and they washed their garments. 15 He said to the people, 'Be ready for the third day; do not go near a woman.’ 16 So it came about on the third day, when it was morning, that there were thunder and lightning flashes and a thick cloud upon the mountain and a very loud trumpet sound, so that all the people who were in the camp trembled. 17 And Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain.” The people washed their clothes and got ready. When God came down to Mount Sinai in the cloud, as Scripture says, “there were thunder and lightning flashes…and a very loud trumpet sound.” Everything was so overwhelming that all the people trembled. It’s hard for us to imagine what they would have been like. Though God’s presence had been with them in the pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night, this sight and sound on Mount Sinai was even more overwhelming. This same God, the God the Israelites trembled before, is the same God who lives in us through His Holy Spirit. If we began to understand how much power dwells in us (Acts 1:8), we would see many more daily victories over the temptations we face (1 Corinthians 10:13) and over the battles with our flesh (Romans 6:12–14).

Day 1

God had delivered the Israelites out of Egypt, and they had been free for three months, as we see in Exodus 19:1, “In the third month after the sons of Israel had gone out of the land of Egypt, on that very day they came into the wilderness of Sinai.” Finally, they had reached the mountain of God, the place where God had met with Moses back i...

Day 2

When we ended yesterday’s devotion, Moses had gone up Mount Sinai to hear from God. God told Moses to tell the Israelites the following in Exodus 19:4–6, “You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles ’wings, and brought you to Myself. 5 Now then, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then...

Day 3

Moses had received from the Lord what He wanted Him to share with the Israelites. According to Exodus 19:7, “So Moses came and called the elders of the people, and set before them all these words which the Lord had commanded him.” Moses told them everything that God had said. God still speaks loud and clear today; He uses His Holy Word (the B...

Day 6

God continues to give us some great descriptions of what it was like when He descended on Mount Sinai. We read in Exodus 19:18, “Now Mount Sinai was all in smoke because the Lord descended upon it in fire; and its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain quaked violently.” God did not just descend, but He descended i...

Day 7

God came down on Mount Sinai for all of the Israelites to see and hear. As we read the end of Exodus 19:19, we see that when Moses spoke to God, God answered Moses with thunder. There is no doubt that Moses understood what God said, but it sounded like thunder to the people of Israel. Then God does something interesting. God had already told ...
