Scripture to Read: Exodus 19:7–9
Moses had received from the Lord what He wanted Him to share with the Israelites. According to Exodus 19:7, “So Moses came and called the elders of the people, and set before them all these words which the Lord had commanded him.” Moses told them everything that God had said. God still speaks loud and clear today; He uses His Holy Word (the Bible) to communicate with us. Through His Holy Word, God also uses pastors, preachers, evangelists, teachers, and other equippers to share with us. But He never wants us to get lazy about opening His Word on our own and reading, studying, and memorizing His Word so that we obey His Word. Knowing God and His Word is critical, for if we choose to remain ignorant of His Word, we never mature properly as a follower of Christ. God also does not want us to fall into the trap of saying we’ll obey when we are really unwilling to obey. When Moses was finished speaking, according to Exodus 19:8, “All the people answered together and said, ‘All that the Lord has spoken we will do! ’And Moses brought back the words of the people to the Lord.” The Israelites declared they were all willing to obey what God had spoken to them through Moses. When God challenges us, our words often declare the same thing the Israelites declared, “Lord, everything you have shown me to do, I will do.” Then we find ourselves failing. Obedience is only possible through complete surrender to our Lord and dying to self.
Challenge & Application
· Why is getting into God’s Word and fellowshipping with our Lord every day so critical to the Christian life?
· How is obedience to our Lord possible, and what has God given us so we can obey Him? (Acts 1:8, 2 Peter 1:3–10)
