Day 4

Scripture to Read: 2 Peter 1

In discipleship, a great tool to help others grow in Christ and His Word is called the S.O.A.P. method. On our Highview website, we find the S.O.A.P. guide. S.O.A.P. stands for Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer. As we make disciples, we lead them to begin with Scripture, to write out a verse that they are reading; then for proper Observation, they write what the passage says in the context in which it is written. From the Scripture, they also highlight key phrases, themes within the passage, questions about the passage, people God reveals within the passage, and compare/contrast the passage to other Scriptures. They also write what the passage means: What truth(s) do they find about God, themselves, Jesus, or the world? They must think deeply about how the truths impact their heart and mind. They must ask questions like: “What can I worship God for?” and “How do I see Jesus transforming me by what He’s teaching me?” This leads to the Application of God’s Truth. They must write out what they plan to do from this passage, for without application, they’ve wasted their time. They need to ask: “Is there a sin to forsake? Is there a promise to claim? Is there an example to follow? Is there a command to obey? Is there something to share with others?” Finally, they Pray and talk to God about what He’s shown them. They pray the scripture(s) over their life, others, and their prayer list. Practice S.O.A.P. with 2 Peter 1:1–10.

Challenge & Application

· What did God teach through the S.O.A.P. method from 2 Peter 1:1–10? · How will you apply what God has taught you from 2 Peter 1:1–10?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!
