Scripture to Read: Daniel 7:2–14
Read Daniel 7:4. This lion parallels the head of gold Nebuchad-nezzar saw in Daniel 2. Daniel 2:38 reveals that the head of gold is Nebuchadnezzar. The lion is described as having eagle wings, probably referencing the swift conquest of Babylon as she came to power over the nation of Israel. But then the lion's wings were plucked (as if the ruler's life had been interrupted), then he was made to stand on his feet, and a human mind was given to that ruler. This describes what happened to Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel 4 when God lovingly disciplined Nebuchadnezzar for seven years. The lion is followed by the bear. Read Daniel 7:5. The bear represents Persia. God had Daniel reference Persia in Daniel 5:28, Daniel 10:13, and Daniel 10:20. The bear parallels the chest and arms of silver that Nebuchadnezzar saw in Daniel 2. Daniel saw these things roughly 200 years before Persia went out of power in 331 BC. The bear had three ribs in its mouth. These are possibly the three provinces Persia conquered (Lydia, Babylon, and Egypt). God used Persia to bring the nation of Israel out of captivity and back into their land. God had that recorded in the books of Ezra and Nehemiah. Next, read Daniel 7:6. Note how God’s Word says “dominion” was given. Each empire came into existence because God moved and allowed them to take over, reminding us of God’s sovereignty. God works through us (Philippians 2:13), so we bring Him glory (Philippians 1:11) daily.
Challenge & Application
• Why is it important to know the prophecy God gave us in the Old Testament?
• How do we know God is working in us and through us, and why should our lives glorify Him?
