Scripture to Read: Daniel 3:13–15
We began to unpack what the accusers brought before Nebuchadnezzar against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego. We must remember that criticism is not necessarily a sign that we’re on the wrong path; it could be because we’re on the right path by choosing to walk in obedience to our Lord. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego chose, above all else, not to compromise Exodus 20:3–6, but instead chose to be obedient to God over the governing authorities of their day. If we were ever faced with deciding to obey our governing authorities, here is what we must do: We must ensure that there is a clear conflict between man’s laws and God’s Word. For instance, the government tells us to do something God says NOT to do or vice versa. Also, we must carefully study all legal remedies. God is the Author of human government, so we must seek to work within the law when possible, but if we know we must disobey the government's demands or laws, then we must also be willing to suffer the consequences. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, as we’ll see in Daniel 3:18, were willing to suffer the consequences to obey God’s commands. Finally, respecting the governing authorities must continue. Although Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego disobeyed Nebuchadnezzar’s command, they were respectful. They referred to Nebuchadnezzar respectfully as “O king.” In Daniel 3:13–17, we read Nebuchadnezzar’s reaction and his challenge to Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego. Nebuchadnezzar was angry; as Daniel 3:13 says he was “in rage and anger.” Another decision had to be made by Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego.
