Day 1

Scripture to Read: Colossians 1:24

When suffering for the cause of Christ is talked about, not many Christians jump up and say they are ready for it all. As God led Paul to write to the church in Colossae, he was actually writing this letter from a Roman prison. Paul knew what it meant to suffer for the cause of Christ, and he was willing to suffer if it meant that others would come to know Christ as their Lord and that weaker Christians would grow in Christ. God had Paul write in Colossians 1:24, “Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I do my share on behalf of His body, which is the church, in filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions.” God had Paul share how he willingly rejoiced in his suffering for the body of Christ. God also had Paul say that he was “filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions.” Paul knew God was using the suffering he was going through to work out His good according to His perfect will (Romans 8:28). Suffering for Christ was not a surprise to Paul, for our Lord Jesus Christ had told Ananias this in Acts 9:16, “for I will show him how much he must suffer for My name’s sake.” Jesus showed Paul, through His Holy Spirit, how he would suffer for His Name’s sake. Paul testified of this in Acts 20:23, “except that the Holy Spirit solemnly testifies to me in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions await me.” Suffering for Christ should be expected and not feared.

Challenge & Application

What was Jesus’ message to Paul about suffering and how did Paul face the suffering? How has God used suffering in your life to lead others to Christ and to mature you in Christ?

Day 2

God had Paul mention “the church” in Colossians 1:24. The body of Christ is His church (Ephesians 1:22–23, Colossians 1:18) and Christ uses His church (His body) to fulfill His ministry—that is why Christ told us, as His followers, not to be surprised when we suffer. The world hated Christ, and we represent Him; therefore, the world is going ...

Day 3

Just as God called Paul, He has called every follower of Christ to be His witnesses (Acts 1:8). What God has called us to share was kept a mystery for many years. We read this in Colossians 1:26–27, “that is, the mystery which has been hidden from the past ages and generations, but has now been manifested to His saints, 27 to whom God willed to ...

Day 4

When we consider that God chooses to use us to carry out His will each day, it is truly amazing and wonderful. God does not need us, but He chooses to invite us to be a part of His perfect plan. Part of God’s plan is that we be His witnesses, and we know that is part of His plan since Jesus told us this in Acts 1:8: “but you will receive powe...

Day 5

Living for our Lord is hard work, but it’s also the most enjoyable and fulfilling because we are serving our Lord and He’s using us to carry out His perfect will. As God continued to use Paul to write His Word, we read in Colossians 1:29, “For this purpose also I labor, striving according to His power, which mightily works within me.” God had...

Day 6

God had Paul share with the believers in Colossae about his struggle, as we read this in Colossians 2:1–3, “For I want you to know how great a struggle I have on your behalf and for those who are at Laodicea, and for all those who have not personally seen my face, 2 that their hearts may be encouraged, having been knit together in love, and a...

Day 7

There have been false teachers for thousands of years because Satan and the spiritual forces of wickedness use lost people to seek to “blind the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God” (2 Corinthians 4:4). So, God had Paul write this in Colossians 2:4–5, “I s...
