Scripture to Read: 1 Timothy 6:10
God brings the hammer down in 1 Timothy 6:10 as we close out this week’s devotions. In yesterday’s devotion, we saw that seeking the riches of this world is never going to satisfy us. Today, God clarifies even further by telling us that it is “the love of money” that is the “root of all sorts of evil.” Note, God does not say that “money” is the root of all sorts of evil, but God said it is “the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil.” Our Lord Jesus Christ tells us that what we are to love is God and each other (Matthew 22:34-40). Loving God and loving people is the greatest commandment of all. God knows that by loving Him and loving others, our lives are transformed to look like Him, act like Him, and live like Him. God also knows that if we choose to love money, we will wander away from trusting Him and that we are going to bring incredible pain and misery to our lives and everyone around us. As Christians, we must work to provide for ourselves and our families, but we must never fall in love with money thinking money will meet our needs. As we have seen most of this week in our devotions, nothing this world has to offer us will ever bring lasting satisfaction. As humans, our flesh will never feel satisfied and we will always want more of what this world offers. Instead, we must hunger for God and His Word, knowing He alone meets our every need.
