Day 3

Scripture to Read: 1 Timothy 6:3-5

God has used Paul to write His Word to Timothy (and us) as we read today in 1 Timothy 6:3-5 the warning about those who teach something contrary to the words of our Lord Jesus Christ. There were many false teachers in the day of Paul and Timothy and many false teachers still exist today. God wants us to make sure we know Him and His Word well so that we recognize false teachers and false doctrine. God’s Word is always going to lead us to live godly, living with personal integrity, and living a life that is above reproach. But those who teach things contrary to God’s Word, God says that they are arrogant and incredibly ignorant. These false teachers take delight in causing envy among people, stirring up quarrels and fights, using verbal abuse to put people down, and even stirring up evil suspicions based on falsehood and not on facts. We live in a culture today that thrives on this kind of garbage. We must be guarded not to give these false teachers any of our time or energy. These false teachers do nothing but cause constant trouble and friction between people. Their minds are set on the things of this earth, so their minds are corrupt and depraved. As believers, God tells us in Ephesians 4:23 that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind. God does not want us to be deprived of His Truth, but He wants us to be renewed by His Truth. Godliness is not about gaining anything from this world but about honoring our King.

Challenge & Application

1. What did God teach you today about false teachers and how to guard against them? 2. How are you making sure your mind is renewed each day and that you are not being deprived of God’s Truth?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

God has been richly pouring His Word into us as we have been walking through 1 Timothy. This week we will examine 1 Timothy 6:1-10. God begins 1 Timothy 6:1 with an admonition to slaves/bondservants/bond-slaves (employees, anyone under someone else’s authority) to make sure that they treat their master (boss, employer, the person in authority...

Day 2

As God uses Paul to speak to Timothy (and to all of us today), we read more about how we are to submit to the authorities God has placed in our lives. God actually has Paul specifically tell Timothy (and us) in 1 Timothy 6:2 that anyone who has a master (boss, supervisor, authority) who is a believer must make sure they do not treat that mast...

Day 4

Our love for God and His Word is evident in the way we pursue our fellowship with God each day and the way we pursue His Word each day as well. Through Paul, God tells Timothy today (and us) that great gain comes from godliness and from being completely content in our Lord. Godliness is a choice we must make to live according to God’s Word. G...

Day 5

God wants us to experience His contentment in this world, but not to get caught up in living for this world. As we saw in yesterday’s devotion, God clarifies that living a godly life and being content in Him is where real gain comes from. Today, as we read 1 Timothy 6:7-8, God reminds us that we came into this world with absolutely nothing. W...

Day 6

It seems like everywhere we turn, there is a new way to “get rich quick.” Seeking to get rich in this life is not anything new. It may seem new to us, but getting rich in this life is something mankind has struggled with since the Garden of Eden. For even in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 2:8-9), where God’s incredible gifts met Adam and Eve’s e...

Day 7

God brings the hammer down in 1 Timothy 6:10 as we close out this week’s devotions. In yesterday’s devotion, we saw that seeking the riches of this world is never going to satisfy us. Today, God clarifies even further by telling us that it is “the love of money” that is the “root of all sorts of evil.” Note, God does not say that “money” is t...
